4 STYLING TIPS TO MAKE YOUR HOME FEEL “HOMEY”
Growing up and still to this day, if there is one thing my mother taught me, it was how to make a presentation. If you knew my mom you would know she is notorious for her chic business casual attire, chacuterie platters, weekly fresh flowers and knows how to make any dinner party feel extravagant. And let me tell you, she makes it seem effortless. Along the road I of course picked up some of her tricks that I realized really can create a mood for everyone. After moving so many times throughout my life, I’ve realized the first two things someone notices when they walk into a room is looks and the smell. Whether it’s a big home or a small apartment I’ve found a few little tricks that can go a long way when you’re wanting to present an inviting and cozy environment.
CREATING A WARM AND INVITING FEEL TO YOUR HOME DOESN’T HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE OR A LOT OF WORK. BY IMPLEMENTING THESE TIPS, YOU QUICKLY CREATE A GREAT IMPRESSION WHEN YOU HAVE GUESTS OVER.
1.
Long drapes! Let’s please put an end to “high water” curtains. Hanging long curtains in front of a large window can not only make the room feel larger but can also give the room an expensive and tasteful feel. The big mistakes people make with curtains is having drapes that are too short and hang inches from the floor (high water curtains) or they hang them right above the window. Try to hang the curtains as close to the ceiling as possible and let your drapes hit the floor. This will elongate the room and create a very elegant look. MY go to curtains are always white linen. I love the look of them in front of a bright window and they look absolutely gorgeous blowing in the wind when the windows are open.
2.
Ditch the bright, white, DMV light bulbs. I promise you this is a game changer. Yes, we love a good natural light feel but that usually creates a harsh blue/white tones that aren’t as inviting. Go for the warm, glowing look. If you want to step it up a notch spend the extra money on some gorgeous Edison bulbs. Those look beautiful in open sconces, chandeliers etc.
3.
Candles! Every room should have candles. I have both electric and wax candles spread through out the house and in every single room. I love scented candles but you can also get non scented ones. There’s just something about the ambiance of softly glowing candles make your home feel “cozy”. Whenever I start cleaning the house, I go through every room and light them. If guests are coming over, candles are burning, even in the bathrooms! My favorite thing to do is buy tall white candles and layer them on an entry table, fireplace mantle or somewhere really pretty. It creates a more intimate and relaxing vibe.
4.
Fresh, weekly flowers. Find yourself a vase that you absolutely love and rotate a new bouquet of flowers every week. Flowers don’t need to be expensive either. You can hit the farmers market or Trader Joes for a seasonal bouquet. When placing flowers around my house, I usually pick a few rooms and do small and larger bundles depending on the area. The rooms I usually put flowers in are the living room, kitchen, dining, top of the stairs and the bedroom. It’s a perfect way to add a little life to an area.
BONUS TIP
Go book shopping! Hit your local thrift store or sort through the books you have at home and take the covers off of the ones that match the colors and tones of your space. Place them neatly side by side or stack them on a coffee table to create a sophisticated feel.
IF YOU’RE A NEUTRAL TONE PERSON LIKE MYSELF, ADDING A POP OF GREENS TO A ROOM WILL HELP KEEP YOUR ROOM LOOKING FRESH AND INVITING.
