sandwich bread

My number one weekly request from my husband is this bread recipe. Its honestly incredible on its own, with butter, with jam or even as sandwich bread. The best part is that it takes minimal effort on your part. My mom graciously gifted me this recipe when I, like many others, was attempting my sourdough journey. I’ll be real, I am one of the most forgetful humans I know and you have to care for your starter like its another child. I did not want to dedicate that time to keeping a jar of starter alive. I couldn’t fathom the thought of feeding it forever until it or I, dies. And so, after many attempts of sourdough bread, I called it quits and found something much more suitable to my lifestyle.

Don’t get me wrong, sourdough is hands down my favorite bread. I love it. And I absolutely love the person who gifted me their starter but I just didn’t have the magic touch that some of you have. With that being said, this post is for all of you who just want the bread without the labor and without the fifty-five ingredients that come from packaged bread. Did you know that bread should contain about 6 whole ingredients? It really fired me up when I realized this and also realized that homemade bread tastes 10X better anyways.

Enough with my bread rant, here is the best yet most simple bread recipe that will have your family in awe.

Sandwich Bread

Prep time: 15 minutes Rise Time: 3 hours Bake time: One Hour

Prep Your Ingredients:

  • 1 TBSP Dry Active Yeast

  • 1 Cup Hot Water

  • 3 Cups of Flour

  • 1/2 Cup of Whole Milk

  • 1 TBSP Sugar

  • 1 TBSP Salt

Instructions:

Mix your hot water and yeast together with a whisk or fork. It should look hot and cloudy. Let sit for five minutes. In a separate bowl, whisk together your flour, sugar and salt. Pour your milk into your dry ingredients followed by your yeast mixture. Combine with wooden sppon until fully incorporated. (If you think your dough is not moist enough, add a little bit of milk at a time until texture is smooth and dough like.)

Cover your bowl with a bread bowl cover or a tea towel for 3-5 hours. *Ensure that your thermostat is set around 70 degrees as colder spaces can take longer to rise*

When you are ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 and place your dutch oven with the lid on top, inside oven while preheating. In the mean-time, flour a flat surface and stretch and fold your dough, flip it over and cup/spin until your dough is round. Place your dough on top of a square piece of parchment paper and place inside of your Dutch oven for 25 minutes covered. Once 25 minutes is up, remove lid and bake another 25 minutes or until golden brown on top.

Let bread sit for about an hour before cutting into it and ensure that you store it in a sealed container or bag.

Something fun I like to do is bring friends and family loafs of bread with jam and butter as a sweet “thinking of you gift” and I wrap my bread inside of our linen bread bags that are perfect for gifting food items, storing baked good when at the Saturday market etc.
